What is the best material for a tie?
High quality ties are made with 100% silk, or a silk blend. This helps them keep their shape and appearance and will tie the perfect knot. The lining of a tie will give shape to the body of a tie, and the lining should be either 100% wool or a wool mixture.
How long / wide are our tie?
Standard neckties are between 52 to 58 inches. If you are taller you may need to custom order a longer tie. The classic tie width is 9cm at the widest part. Our ties are generally slightly wider at 10cm at the widest part.
How can I tell if the tie is high quality?
There are a number of indicators, including fabric, cut and feel. High quality ties will be cut on the bias; this will allow the tie to sit flush against your shirt after it is knotted. With silk ties the fabric should feel soft; if it is rough (unless it is a raw silk tie) the quality of the silk is inferior.
What is the best knot for me?
The size of the knot should be in proportion with the collar, not so big that the collar is pushed up, and not too narrow that the knot becomes lost in the collar.
A good tip is to keep the knot tight throughout the tying process; this will keep it tidy.
Please refer to our How to Tie a Tie guide, it provides easy to follow instructions for tying the Windsor, Half Windsor, Four in Hand, and Pratt knots.
How long should I wear my tie?
The front tip of your tie should sit just touching your belt (or the top of your waist band). If it is too long or short, it could give the appearance that you are rushed, leaving a negative impression of your time management skills (not the best first impression).
What shade should my tie be?
Generally a tie should be darker than the colour of your shirt. However this rule, like many fashion rules can be broken - and with good taste. If you are colour savvy try experimenting with some different shades than you're used to - you'll love the result.
What colour should my tie be?
There is no one colour that suits all. Selecting the colour of your tie is an opportunity to be creative. The right colour tie can be the icing on the cake. The colour that you select should compliment your shirt; make sure it doesn't fade into the background. You can be subtle and go with a pastel colour, or bold and pick a more vibrant hue. As a guide, the main colour of the tie should complement your suit and the secondary colour should pick up the colour of your shirt.
How do I select the pattern?
Selecting a pattern is an opportunity for you to express yourself. Striped ties are great for a professional look, and checkered ties can give you a creative edge. Check out our Shop by Pattern category from the left-hand menu.
How do I take my tie off?
One of the most important steps for caring for your tie is ensuring you take it off correctly. When removing your tie it is important to untie it, do not leave it knotted as this will crease the fabric.
To ensure your tie will stay looking crisp and new; simply reverse the steps that you followed to tie the tie.
How do I store my tie?
An important rule for caring for your tie is to store it undone - never leave it knotted. Untie your tie, then hang it on a tie rack out of direct sunlight (this will stop it from fading). To get the wrinkles out of your tie, roll the tie from the narrow end and leave it for a few days.
How do I store my tie while travelling?
It is a good idea to loosely roll the tie and place it inside a tie case, if you don't have one, use something to cover it, like a bag, or a pair of socks. Don't store the tie in plastic for extended periods, this can cause the fabric to sweat and may discolour around the edges.
What should I do with a loose thread?
If a thread does happen to come loose don't panic, get a pair of scissors and cut it close to the seam (be careful not to cut the fabric). Never pull a loose thread - you can do more damage to the tie.
How many ties should I have?
This is really up to you. It's a good idea not to wear the same tie twice in a row as they need time to return to shape.
Should I iron my tie?
It is not a good idea to iron directly onto a tie, especially when the tie is 100% silk. If the iron is too hot, it will damage the fabric. If you want to use an iron put a clean piece of cloth (like a pillow case) between the tie and your iron, and iron on a low heat.
Another solution is to steam your tie, by hanging it in the bathroom when showering.
How do I clean my tie?
Do not wash your tie - if you wash your tie in water it will shrink unevenly. The best idea is to get it dry cleaned once a year, when selecting your dry cleaner make sure they have the correct equipment to clean silk ties.
If you do get your tie soiled, act quickly by dabbing the area with a damp cloth. Do not rub as this can cause the silk to break and may appear rough in patches.
Care Tips
Avoid spraying cologne on your tie, it can damage the fabric and cause discolouration. You can cover your tie with a tissue before you put on cologne, but best is to put on your tie last.
